THE OFFICE collaborates with Yo-Yo Ma and Sound Postings, his creative team, to produce Our Common Nature, which explores the ways culture connects us to one another and to the natural world. Together with local partners, THE OFFICE, Yo-Yo, and Sound Postings develop collaborative acts of art and culture that strengthen our relationship to nature and to each other, and ask how these relationships can bring us hope and wisdom as we imagine and build our future.
Our Common Nature is Yo-Yo Ma’s ongoing cultural journey that brings his cello out of the concert hall and into some of the most awe-inspiring and fragile landscapes on Earth, from Appalachia’s Great Smoky Mountains and Kentucky’s Mammoth Cave to the shores of Hawaiʻi and beyond. Through intimate performances and gatherings with local communities, the project explores how music, story, and ritual can invite us to remember that we share a common future—one rooted in our shared humanity, our responsibility to the Earth.
Beyond a performance, Yo-Yo Ma embeds himself in the local rhythms of land and community. In West Virginia’s New River Gorge, he shared a heritage Appalachian meal at Lost Creek Farm, listened to retired coal miners’ stories amid historic mine works, and joined poets, students, and river guides for performances, hikes, and a rafting trip that turned the river itself into a classroom. In Hawaiʻi, Yo-Yo Ma learned from Molokaʻi culture-keepers through ‘awa ceremony and musical offerings to the ocean, visited Kalaupapa to honor the community’s history and resilience, and boarded the Hōkūleʻa canoe to hear how scientists are protecting marine life.
Across meals, rituals, conversations, and concerts, Our Common Nature turns each landscape into a gathering place, inviting audiences to imagine new ways of living in mutual care with the Earth.
