The longest running documentary film festival in the United States

Since 1977, the American Museum of Natural History's Margaret Mead Film Festival has presented works of film and video that increase our understanding of the complexity and diversity of peoples and cultures around the world. Rooted in the American Museum of Natural History’s rich research and collections, the Mead Festival explores what it means to document culture today. The festival has traditionally encompassed a broad spectrum of creative nonfiction storytelling, always celebrating new technologies and evolving modes of storytelling while presenting the best in non-fiction film.

From indigenous community media to experimental documentary, the Festival has been distinguished in fields of documentary film and anthropology by its outstanding selection of titles, representation of a range of cultural perspectives, and by the forums for discussion with filmmakers and renowned speakers.

THE OFFICE helped to reimagine the Mead in 2012, and works closely with AMNH staff to curate and produce the festival.
